CHRONIC SINUSITIS

Nasal sinuses are accessory air cavities connected with the nasal cavity and lined with a continuous epithelium. So sinusitis is an inflammation of single or multiple sinuses or all the sinuses of one or both sides.

Causes


1) Common cold
2) Influenza
3) Enteric fever
4) Pneumonia
5) Exanthema
6) Root abscess of upper teeth

Symptoms


1) Nasal discharge
2) Headache
3) Throat irritation due to post nasal discharge
4) Anorexia – due to post nasal discharge
5) If infected, temperature rises

Investigations


1) Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, to rule out allergic pathology
2) Radiography

Therapeutic considerations


1) Steam inhalation
2) Local fomentation with hot pads over sinus area
3) Avoid cold drinks, ice creams and fried items
4) Hot water gargling helps in case of throat infection
5) Vit-C*
6) Gooseberry

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda, this is a predominantly “KAPHA” dosha disorder with some involvement of VATA dosha. If ayurvedic treatment is started with some lifestyle changes, can cure this problem completely, therefore ayurveda treatment is highly recommended.
