OSTEOARTHRITIS

A degenerative disease consisting of joint degeneration, loss of cartilage and alterations of subchondral bone.

Symptoms

Mild early morning stiffness, pain that worsens on joint use and loss of joint function

Causes

1) Cumulative effect of decades of use i.e., ageing
2) Congenital abnormalities in joint structure or function e.g., hypermobility and abnormally shaped joint
3) Trauma
4) Crystal deposition – uric acid
5) Previous inflammatory disease of joint (septic arthritis)

Investigation

X-ray shows loss of cartilage, crystal deposition

Therapeutic approach

1) Estradiol worsens osteoarthritis, botanicals like Glycyrrhiza glabra contain phytoestrogens that bind to estrogen receptors
2) Insulin insensitivity or deficiency predisposes to osteoarthritis so maintain sugar levels
3) Achieve normal body weight
4) Antioxidant nutrients
5) Niacinamide*
6) Vit-E*
7) Vit-C*
8) Pantothenic acid*
9) Physiotherapy, hot fomentation and walking help improve functional status and relieve pain in knee osteoarthritis
10) Boswellia serrata – Indian tree

Ayurveda approach

According to ayurveda, this is a predominantly “VATA” dosha disorder which becomes more severe with age. But if patient is ready to follow a strict diet regime with medicines, this disease can be cured completely. Therefore, ayurveda treatment is highly recommended.
