URTICARIA

Well-circumscribed erythernatous wheals with raised serpiginous borders and blanched centers, which may coalesce to become giant wheals. Limited to superficial portion of the dermis.

Causes


1) Moderate pressure, simple contact with furniture, garters, bracelets, watch bands, towel, bedding. This process starts immediately after contact

2) Other diseases – parasitosis, insect bites, neuropsychiatric disorders, hormonal changes, thyroid disorders, pregnancy, menopause, diabetes

3) Heat reflex urticaria- physical exercise, emotional stress, warm bath, sauna, hot spices, cold exposure

4) Drugs – penicillin, aspirin

5) Food – certain foods like brinjals, nuts, milk products, non-veg food

Food colorants
– Azo dye FD&C yellow #5

Food flavorings – Salicylic acid esters, flavoring agents like cinnamon, vanilla, menthol, aspartame are used to flavor foods

Food preservatives – Benzoates, Butylated hydroxytoluene, Butylated hydroxyanisol.

Sulfites – sprayed on fresh foods (shrimp, fruits, vegetables) also used in beer, wines.                       

Food emulsifiers and stabilizers

6) Infection – bacterial infection, especially tonsillitis and dental infection.

Virus – Hepatitis B.

Candida albicans – yeast free diet, bread, buns, sausage, wine, beer, cider, grapes, sultanas, marmite, vinegar, ketchup, pickles

7) Psychological stress
