Peripheral vestibular disorders : Meniere's disease

It is a disease of the membranous inner ear and is characterised by episodic vertigo,deafness and usually tinnitus due to hydropic distension of the endolymphatic system.

Causes of Peripheral vestibular disorders : Meniere's disease


1) Overproduction of endolymph
2) Defective absorbtion of endolymph
3) Sepsis, allergy and impaired glucose metabolim are also blamed

Symptoms of Peripheral vestibular disorders : Meniere's disease


1) Acute episodes of severe vertigo
2) Tinnitus ( Sound )
3) Sensorineural deafness
4) Some patients may have premonition of the attack in the form of sense of pressure in the ear
5) The patient may be completely normal between acute attacks

Investigations for Peripheral vestibular disorders : Meniere's disease


1) Audiometry
2) C.T. Scan
3) MRI scan

Treatment / Home remedies for Peripheral vestibular disorders : Meniere's disease


1) Drink lukewarm water as much as possible
2) Have more water vapours through nose
3) Cinnamon seed is boiled with water and taken as 10 ml 3 times a day
4) Ginger is also useful for this disease, its juice can be taken as 2 tsf 2 times a day with 1 tsf honey
5) Vit-C is also beneficial
6) Chyawanprash is useful

This disease is a classical example of ayurvedic pathogenesis where overproduction (atipravrutti),
obstruction (sang) are termed as causes.
Ayurvedic medicines are very useful for this diease, this problem can be completely cured by developing /stimulating alternate pathways to clear the endolymph.
