It is a complex multifactorial disease of immunodeficiency and autoimmune inflammation involving multiple systems of the body (immune, GI, GU, Endocrine, Dermatologic, Nervous)
Causes
Human immunodeficiency virus, which is transmitted through
1) Sexual contact – heterosexual, homosexual and bisexual routes
2) Parenteral – injection needles, sharp instruments contaminated with body fluids, contaminated blood and blood products, transplacentally or perinatally from HIV infected women to her newborn baby
Symptoms
1) Opportunistic infections such as oral fungal infection or pneumonia
2) Sudden onset of fever, sweat, malaise, fatigability, joint and muscle pain, headache, sore throat, diarrhea, generalized swelling of lymph glands, rash on trunk and weight loss
3) Advanced stages show neurological changes including dementia and loss of nerve functions e.g. – partial paralysis, vertigo, visual disturbances etc.
Investigations
1) Positive test for antibody against human immunodeficiency virus
2) CBC with platelet count and ESR
Therapeutic consideration
1) Antioxidant therapy to reduce oxidative stress a) Beta carotene b) Vit -C c) Vit -E, as oxidative stress may contribute to HIV disease pathogenesis*
2) Improve nutritional status via improving gastrointestinal nutrient absorption and mucosal immunity – a) lactobacilli b) digestive enzymes in papaya, pineapple c) Garlic *
3) Improve nutritional status – by adding clean fresh fruits and vegetables, oats. Patient should get good natural iron, Vit -B, copper and zinc.
4) Remove secondary infections and primary infection through a) Momordica charantia b) Glycyrrhiza glabra c) Curcuma longa d) Aloe vera e) Allium sativa f) whole body hyperthermia
5) Increase oxidation of tissues through exercise, pranayama, yoga
6) Psychotherapy – support group, autosuggestion
7) Support for patients taking retroviral therapy – ayurvedic medicines
Ayurveda approach
According to ayurveda, this is a disease where all doshas are involved and is difficult to cure. But if patient is ready to take ayurvedic medicines regularly with a healthy food and lifestyle,it will control the pathogenesis of this disease and patient can lead a normal and healthy life for many years. Therefore, ayurvedic medicines are strongly recommended for this disease, as they do not have any side effects.
