It is a hypersensitivity disorder characterized by bronchospasm, mucosal edema and excessive excretion of viscous mucus that can lead to ventilatory insufficiency.
Symptoms
1) Recurrent attacks of dyspnoea
2) Recurrent attacks of cough and expectoration of tenacious mucoid sputum
3) Heaviness or tightness in the chest
Factors causing bronchial hyperresponsiveness in bronchial asthma
1) Allergens e.g. – pollen, house dust, mite
2) Drugs – NSAIDs, particularly aspirin
3) Exercise
4) Inhalation of cold air
5) Viral infections of the respiratory tract
6) Environmental pollution with cigarette smoke, strong scent and perfumes, fumes of petrol
7) Food allergy, food additives
Investigations
1) Haemogram – may reveal eosinophilia
2) Sputum examination – to detect infection
3) Chest X-ray
4) Increased serum IgE
Therapeutic approach
1) Food allergy – avoid the food which gives hypersensitivity reaction. Most common culprits are eggs, fish, shell fish, nuts, peanuts, milk, chocolate
2) Vegetarian diet for long term significantly improves 92% of patients. It also reduces the tendency to infectious diseases
3) Vit-C is highly recommended*
4) Carotenes as an antioxidants has got protective action
5) Vit-B12 improves symptoms*
6) Magnesium*
7) Glycyrrhiza glabra, Lobelia inflata, green chilli, allium
8) Relaxation therapy
Ayurveda approach
According to ayurveda, this is a predominantly VATA disorder with involvement of KAPHA dosha at later stages. But if ayurved treatment is started with some lifestyle changes, it can completely control the disease and patient will be without symptoms.
