OTITIS MEDIA

It is inflammation, swelling or infection of middle ear. It is of two types:-

1) Acute otitis media – usually preceded by upper respiratory tract infection or allergy. Common organisms are Strepotococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae
2) Chronic otitis media – presented by constant swelling of middle ear

Symptoms


1) Acute – earache or irritability, fever & chills & history of recent upper respiratory tract infection
2) Chronic – painless hearing loss, oozing of serous fluid from ear

Standard treatment consist of antibiotics, analgesics, antihistamines. If patient is unresponsive to treatment, surgery is performed . In almost half the cases those treatments are found to be ineffective

Causes


1) Exposure to smoke
2) Early bottle feeding
3) Food allergy
4) Abnormal Eustachian tube function

Therapeutic approach


1) Breast feeding is encouraged over bottle feeding. Human milk is protective due to high antibody content. Also breast fed infants have thymus glands 20 times larger than formulae fed infants
2) Food allergy – during pregnancy & lactation if mother avoids food to which she is allergic, it helps avoid attack. Most common food allergens are milk, wheat, egg, peanuts, soy, corn, tomato, chicken, apple
3) Humidifiers are helpful
4) Vit-A*
5) Vit-C*

Ayurveda approach

According to ayurveda, this is a dominantly KAPHA dosha disorder with involvement of VATA .But if Ayurvedic medicines are taken with a strict diet control ,can cure this problem completely .Therefore, ayurvedic medicines are strongely recommended.
