BREAST ABSCESS

Collection of pus in the breast tissue can be termed as breast abscess.


Causes of Breast Abscess



1) Too tight elastic brassiere
2) Milk engorgement (stagnant milk is a good medium for bacterial growth)
3) Bacterial infections – due to low immunity immediately after delivery
4) Wounds due to baby’s teeth
5) Long standing retraction of nipple


Symptoms of Breast Abscess



1) Pain at the site
2) Swelling at the site
3) Formation of pus at the site
4) Fever
5) Oozing of pus and watery discharge from the ruptured abscess


Therapeutic consideration for Breast Abscess



1) Hygiene – abscess site and baby’s mouth should be kept clean
2) Use of breast pump to avoid stagnation of milk
3) Improve nutrition and hydration to improve immunity
4) Milk fomentation to relieve pain and increase blood circulation
5) Mother's milk is boiled first for 5 minutes and then given to infant
6) Antibiotics should be avoided if pus is present
