BRONCHIECTASIS

It is a localized dilation and distortion of the bronchi leading to several complications.


Causes of Bronchiectasis



1) Congenital factors – like dyskinetic cilia or mucoviscidosis
2) Obstruction of bronchus – due to foreign body, tumor, stenosis, inspissated secretions
3) Infections – pneumonia, whooping cough, tuberculosis, fungal infections, bronchial asthma
4) Fibrocystic disease, Immotile cilia syndrome


Symptoms of Bronchiectasis



1) Cough – copious purulent expectoration, often blood tinged and foul smelling
2) Patient is generally a young adult in age group of 14-25, whose growth and development may be affected
3) Enlarged lymph nodes around neck
4) Clubbing of fingers can be seen in chronic patients

C.T. scan of thorax, sputum examination

Therapeutic consideration for Bronchiectasis



1) Improve general health and nutrition of the patient
2) Prompt treatment of childhood respiratory infections
3) Exercise
4) Steam inhalation and hot fomentation externally
5) Atmospheric pollution if any should be avoided.
