CARCINOID SYNDROME

It is due to tumors originating in abdomen with secondaries. Symptoms are due to secretions from such tumors.

Symptoms


Symptoms appear intermittently and in varying combinations for a number of years before the diagnosis is suggested
1) Flushing and erythema over the face and upper chest are the most characteristic
2) Lacrimation and periorbital oedema
3) Recurrent diarrhea
4) Abdominal pain
5) Breathlessness when lungs are involved

Investigation


1) Ultrasonography of abdominal cavity
2) X-ray chest
3) Liver function test

Therapeutic consideration


1) Extra exertion and alcohol should be stopped completely
2) Breathing exercises like yoga, pranayama to increase lung capacity
3) Fasting / eating less quantity should be avoided as it may precipitate hypotention
4) Good nutritional support with fresh fruits and vegetables
5) Emotional support

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda, this is a disease where all doshas are involved and is difficult to cure. But if patient is ready to take ayurvedic medicines regularly with a healthy food and lifestyle, it will control the pathogenesis of this disease and patient can lead a normal and healthy life for many years.
