CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

It is a uni or bilateral paraesthesia in palmar aspect of first three digits and lateral half of fourth digit of hand due to median nerve compression within carpal tunnel.


Causes

1) Fractures
2) Arthritis spurs
3) Tumor or thickening of flexor retinaculum
4) Fat deposition
5) Idiopathic – can't be described

Symptoms


1) Pain, numbness or burning on palmar surface of first three digits of hand
2) Occurs more in females, symptoms worse at night, relief from shaking or rubbing hand
3) Possible loss of strength

Investigations

1) Nerve conduction
2) CT scan
3) MR imaging

Therapeutic approach

1) Fomentation – immersion in hot water for 3 minutes followed by immersion in cold water for 30 seconds, repeated 3 to 5 times
2) Stretching – flexing wrists and fists with arms extended for 5 minutes. Exercise to be done before work starts and during each break
3) In some cases immobilization needs to be done
4) Surgery can be taken up as last resort
5) Vit B supplementation*

Ayurveda approach


It is a predominantly VATA disorder. If a strict diet regime is followed with medicines and exercises, maximum number of patients get cure of the disease. So ayurvedic treatment is highly recommended for this problem.
