GOUT

It is a type of arthritis caused by increased uric acid, which causes uric acid crystals deposition in joints, tendons, kidneys and other tissues.

Symptoms


1) Acute pain at small joints frequently nocturnal
2) Asymptomatic periods between acute attacks
3) Uric acid kidney stones

Causes


1) Family history is found
2) Abuse of diuretics and low dose aspirin
3) Non vegetarian food, alcohol, refined carbohydrates, high protein intake
4) Lead toxicity

Investigations


1) Increased uric acid levels in blood
2) On X-ray, deposition of uric acid crystals can be seen at the joints especially metatarso-phalangeal joint (joint of toe)

Facts


Gout can be associated with psoriasis

Therapeutic approach


1) Low purine diet – avoid high purine food like organ meat, fish, also dried legumes, poultry, mushrooms, spinach
2) Achieve ideal body weight
3) Abundant complex carbohydrates intake
4) Liberal fluid intake
5) Vit-E*
6) Vit-C*
7) Bromelain – from pineapple is effective
8) Niacin*

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda VATA dosha is dominantly involved with RAKTA DHATU , it is called VATA RAKTA. If medicines are taken with a strict diet regime, can cure this disease completely, except some bony deformities if already present.
