CERVICAL DYSPLASIA

Dysplasia is a precancerous lesion. 95% of cervix cancers originate in squamo-columnar junction of cervical os. Peak incidence of invasive lesion is found at the age of 45. Cervical cancer is the second most common malignancy in women.

Causative factors

1) Sexual activity – early age at first intercourse and multiple sexual partners. Arginine-rich histone or protamine released by sperm during degradation could be oncogenic agent.
2) Virus – women with herpetic cervicitis have 4 to 16 fold increased risk of cervical dysplasia / cancer
3) Smoking – smokers have 2-3 times increased risk as compared to non-smokers. Smoking can also induce vit-C deficiency
4) Oral contraceptives – contraceptive pills potentiate adverse effects of smoking and diminish numerous nutrient levels like vit-C, vit-B6& B12, riboflavin and zinc

Investigations

Biopsy is done to confirm cancer

Therapeutic approach

1) High fat intake is related to increased risk,so low fat is recommended
2) Diet rich in fruits and vegetables protects against carcinogenesis
3) Vit-A and beta carotene – serum vit-A and beta carotenes are much lower in cervical dysplasia patients. Vit-A and beta carotene improves the integrity and function of epithelial cells, provide antioxidant properties and enhance immune function*
4) Vit-C – improves wound healing, enhances immunity and inhibits carcinogen formation
5) Folic acid *
6) Pyridoxine *
7) Selenium*

Ayurveda approach

According to ayurveda this is  predominantly a “VATA” disorder. If ayurvedic treatment is started at early stages, with lifestyle changes, it can be cured completely. But if patient is at late stages, medicines and lifestyle changes help some patients very effectively whereas in some patients partially.
Therefore ayurvedic medicine is recommended for this problem.
