HAEMORRHOIDS

Those are dilated vessels of the haemorrhoidal vascular plexus in the anal canal.

Signs & symptoms


1) Bright red bleeding on surface of stool on toilet tissue and / or in toilet bowl
2) Pain – only when acute inflammation of external haemorrhoids. Internal haemorrhoids rarely cause pain
3) Itching – the mucus discharge from prolapsing internal haemorrhoids

Types of haemorrhoids


1) External
2) Internal
3) Internal-external

Causative factor


1) Genetic weakness of veins
2) Excessive venous pressure due to
a) Long periods of sitting
b) Heavy lifting
c) Pregnancy
d) Coughing
e) Sneezing
f) Vomiting
g) Liver disorders
h) Low fiber diet
i) Straining on defecation

Investigations


1) Sigmoidoscopy

Therapeutic consideration


1) Diet – high fiber diet is the most important component in preventing haemorrhoids. Vegetables, fruits, legumes and grains promote peristalsis. Chances of haemorrhoids are more in persons who do not eat breakfast
2) Fiber supplements – Isabgol, wheat bran
3) Topical therapy – coconut oil externally to reduce itching
4) Fomentation – hot water hip bath is most beneficial

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda this is a dominantly KAPHA & RAKTA disorder. But if ayurvedic medicines are taken with a strict diet regime, it can cure this problem completely. Therefore, ayurvedic medicines are strongly recommended for this problem.
