FISSURE IN ANO

It is an elongated ulcer in the long axis of the lower anal canal.

Signs & symptoms


1) Pain – sharp agonizing pain starting during defecation, often overwhelming in intensity and lasting an hour or more
2) Blood – stools are frequently streaked with blood
3) Discharge – slight discharge of serum accompanies fully established cases

Causes


1) The natural curve of anal canal puts more pressure on the anterior & posterior wall
2) Excessive pressure due to a) pregnancy b) constipation c) straining during defecation
3) An incorrectly performed operation of haemorrhoids
4) Hard stool

Investigation


1) Haemogram to see hemoglobin
2) Sigmoidoscopy

Therapeutic consideration


1) Diet – high fiber diet is the most important component in preventing fissre in ano.Vegetables,fruits,legumes and grains promote peristalsis. Chances of fissure in ano are more in persons who do not eat breakfast
2) Fiber supplements – Isabgol, wheat bran
3) Topical therapy- coconut oil externally to reduce itching
4) Fomentation – hot water hip bath is most beneficial

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda this is dominantly PITTA & VATA disorder. But if ayurvedic medicines are taken with a strict diet regime, it can cure this problem completely. Therefore, ayurvedic medicines are strongly recommended for this problem.
