It is a functional disorder of the large intestine in which normal activity of the bowel is altered causing abdominal distress and constipation or diarrhea.
Symptoms
1) Periodic constipation / diarrhea
2) Incomplete bowel evacuation
3) Urgent painless diarrhea commonly seen after waking up or during / following a meal
4) Mucorrhoea – mucus in stool and pain
Diagnostic test
1) Stool examination to rule out bleeding
2) Sigmoidoscopy to rule out ulcer
3) There is no confirmatory test for irritable bowel syndrome
Causative factors
1) Many members of a family can have this problem, which gives genetic cause
2) Certain food substances are not well tolerated by some, consumption can develop irritable bowel syndrome
3) Infections – colonic infections, amoebic and bacterial
4) Drugs – abuse of laxatives, certain antibiotics, digoxin cause hypermotility of bowel
5) Emotional stress
Therapeutic consideration
1) Avoid alcohol, tobacco, excess cold & hot beverage
2) Milk & milk products are avoided in case of lactose intolerance
3) Nuts & beans should be avoided in flatulence
4) Regular interval between meals & regular meals are necessary
5) Relaxation techniques like yoga, pranayam
6) Regular exercise
