CROHN'S DISEASE

 It is a granulomatous inflammatory reaction throughout entire thickness of bowel wall, may involve buccal mucosa, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, jejunum, ileum and colon.    

Causes

1) Genetic predisposition- multiple members of a family have Crohn's disease
2) Infections – viruses and bacterias are blamed
3) Antibiotic exposure – Crohn's disease is found  more in people, who are exposed to early and large quantities of antibiotics
4) Immune system derangements
5) Disease is increasing in cultures consuming western diet i.e., refined carbohydrates
6) Emotional stress
7) Abuse of aspirin is also blamed

Corn flakes have been linked with Crohn's disease.

Facts about Crohn's disease


Many patients undergo spontaneous remission, 20% at one year and 12% at 2 years

Symptoms


1) Intermittent bouts of diarrhea, low grade fever and right lower quadrant pain
2) Anorexia, weight loss, flatulence and malaise

Investigation


1) X-ray shows abnormality of terminal ileum

Facts

Generally coticosteroids are used but they
1) Stimulate protein catabolism
2) Depress protein synthesis
3) Decrease absorption of calcium and phosphorus

Sulphasalazine –


1) Inhibits the absorption and transport of folate
2) Increases urinary secretion of ascorbic acid

Therapeutic considerations


1) High complex carbohydrates – high fiber diet is useful
2) Iron – to correct anemia due to blood loss
3) Calcium – to correct loss due to less absorption
4) Potassium – to correct loss due to diarrhea
5) To correct deficiency induced weakness, due to poor absorption

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda, this is a TRIDOSHAJA vikar and runs a long course. But if ayurvedic medicines are taken with a strict diet regime, can control the progress of this disease and control every symptom of this problem. Therefore, ayurvedic medicines are safe and recommended for this problem.
