MIGRAINE

It is a familial disorder characterized by recurrent attacks of headache widely variable in intensity, frequency and duration.

Causes


1) Vasomotor instability – during an attack there is constriction of small blood vessels
2) Platelet disorder – migraine platelet shows increased spontaneous aggregation
3) Neuronal disorder – trigeminovascular neurons release a pain inducing substance upon stress
4) Serotonin deficiency
5) Food allergy

Symptoms


1) Recurrent paroxysmal attacks of headache
2) Headache is typically pounding and unilateral
3) Anorexia, nausea and gastrointestinal upset and followed by drowsiness
4) Migraine can occur with or without warning symptoms (auras)
5) Major auras – blurring or bright spot in vision, anxiety, fatigue, disturbed thinking and numbness or tingling on one side of body

Facts


1) Females are more prone
2) Classic migraine patients have two fold increase in incidence of mitral valve prolapse

Therapeutic consideration


1) Identify problematic foods and avoid it, food stuff like a) cheese b) chocolate c) coffee d) shell fish e) red wine f) alcohol g) food additives
2) Biofeedback and relaxation therapy – yoga and autosuggestions are useful
3) Magnesium reduces migraine attacks*
4) Riboflavin also helps *
5) Zingiber officinalis

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda this is a predominantly PITTA disorder with involvement of VATA dosha. But if ayurvedic medicines are taken with a strict diet regime, can cure the problem completely. Therefore, ayurvedic medicines are strongly recommended for this problem.
