KIDNEY STONES

Presence of calculi, single or multiple in the kidneys or in the urinary tract.

Causes of Kidney Stones


1) Infections – it is a common consequence of cystitis associated with obstruction and stagnation of the urine
2) Hypercalciuria – ie., more calcium excretion through urine due to various metabolic diseases
3) Heredity – some hereditary disorders can lead to
4) Concentrated urine – due to dehydration
5) Hyperuricemia – due to gout and leukemia
6) pH of urine – calcium stone increase in alkaline urine while uric acid and cystine stones tend to grow in acidic urine

Symptoms of Kidney Stones


1) Excruciating intermittent radiating pain originated in flank or kidney region
2) Nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension
3) Chills, fever & urinary frequency

Investigation


1) X-ray (kidney, ureter, bladder)
2) Ultrasonography

Therapeutic consideration


1) Vegetarians have decreased risk of developing stones, those eating more fresh fruits and vegetables have lower incidence of stones
2) Excess weight and insulin insensitivity induce hypercalciuria and high risk of stone
3) Magnesium prevents stone formation*
4) Calcium restriction enhances stone formulation*
5) Citrate prevents stone formation *
6) Vitamin K rich food helps to prevent stone formation*

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda this is a predominantly VATA and KAPHA disorder with a increase in KLEDA. But if ayurvedic medicines are taken with diet control, up to 16mm calculi can be dissolved and excreted successfully. Therefore, ayurvedic medicines are advised for patients having required size of stone / stones. But ayurvedic diet is strongly recommended for every patient.
