1) In 2/3 of cases onset between ages 20-40 yrs
2) 60% in female and 40% in male
3) Areas with higher prevalence located in higher latitudes, in northern and southern hemispheres
Causative factors
1) Virus infection – direct viral infection or viral infection leading to autoimmunity may cause demyelination
2) Diet – strong association between diet rich in animal and dairy products and incidence of m.s
3) Free radical damage
Investigations
1) Magnetic resonance imaging – zones of demyelination
2) CSF exam – IgG elevated in 80-90% m.s.
3) Nerve fiber conduction
Therapeutic approach
1) Exercise, passive movement and massage for weakened limbs
2) Low saturated fat
3) Fresh legumes, grains and vegetables
4) Vit-E *
5) Vit-B12 *
Ayurveda approach
According to ayurveda, this is a predominantly VATA disorder and said to have serious consequences. If strict diet regime is followed with medicines and exercises, a good number of people can lead a normal life, rest of people can get relief in some of their complaints.
