PARKINSON'S DISEASE

It is a sequel of different triologies that present with similar clinical characteristics

Causes


1) Age related decline in striatal neurotransmitter neurons
2) Free radicals
3) Environmental toxic factors (carbon monoxide, manganese, drugs)
4) Atherosclerosis
5) Idiopathic (unknown cause)
6) Trauma (boxers)
7) Mental work – stressful work environment

Symptoms


1) Disorders of movement – tremours, postural instability, slow movements
2) Rigidity of muscles especially of limbs
3) Voice volume is reduced and speech becomes hurried, monotonous
4) Handwriting becomes gradually smaller tremulous and cramped
5) Constipation, disturbance of micturation

Facts


1) mean age of onset of the disease is 55 years
2) this problem is increasing in incidences

Therapeutic consideration


1) Avoid exposure to environmental toxins – especially carbon monoxide which is becoming more common in an urban civilization
2) Nutrition – fresh fruits and vegetables removes free radicals from the system and helps prevent the further damage to the nervous system
3) Exercise / physiotherapy – to avoid muscle stiffness and postural problems regular exercise is very essential
4) Vit-E *
5) Vit-B complex*
6) Vit-A*

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda, this is a predominantly VATA disorder and said to have serious consequences. If strict diet regime is followed with medicines and exercises, a good number of people can lead a normal life. Rest of people can get relief in some of their complaints.
