VARICOSE VEINS

Veins are responsible for the return of impure blood towards the heart. Defects in venous wall allow dilation of vein and damage to valves. Valve damage increases static pressure, causing bulging known as varicose vein.

Symptoms

1) Oedema on leg
2) Pigmentation and ulceration of the skin
3) Feeling of heaviness, pain, discomfort

Some facts

1) 50% of middle-aged adults affected
2) Gravitational pressure that standing exerts on veins increases the disease
3) Serious varicosities involve obstruction and valve defects. It can lead to thrombophlebitis, pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarction and stroke

Investigations

1) Doppler ultrasonography is the most accurate method of diagnosis

Causes

1) Genetic weakness of veins or venous valves
2) Excess venous pressure – due to low fiber diet induced increase in straining during defecaton
3) Long periods of standing and / or heavy lifting
4) Damage to veins or venous valves due to thrombophlebitis

Therapeutic approach

1) Avoiding standing for long periods reduce risk
2) Exercise like walking, riding aerobics and jogging are beneficial
3) Fibers – varicose veins are rarely seen in parts of  world with high fiber, unrefined diets. Fruits and salads are beneficial
Supplements

1) Vit-A*
2) Vit-B*
3) Vit-C*
4) Centella asiatica – promotes collagen synthesis
