ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

It is a neurodegenerative disorder involving progressive deterioration of memory and dementia.

Facts


1) Frequency rises with increasing age
2) Called as the disease of 20th century

Causes


1) Genetic factors – amyloid precursor gene on chromosome(#)21,apolipoprotein E gene on #19, mutations on #21, 14 and 1 are associated with symptoms
2) Environmental factors – traumatic head injury, neurotoxins and free radical damage play major role in disease
3) Aluminium – Alzheimer's disease patients have much higher aluminium than normal people. Elevated aluminium is linked to poorer mental functions. Sources of aluminium are water supply, food, antacids and antiperspirants

Diagnosis


Exclusion of other possible diagnosis

Recommended lab tests


1) Complete blood count, liver function test, renal function test, thyroid function test
2) EEG – it is an important tool in differentiating dementias
3) CT-scan – shows brain atrophy in 4-5% of dementia patients, brain tumors are seen

Therapeutic approach


1) Prevention of causative factor like aluminium exposure and neurotoxins
2) Magnesium – aluminium absorption decreases because of magnesium. Magnesium rich diet, unprocessed foods, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds

Antioxidants


1) Thiamine – Vit-B1
2) Vit-B12
3) Regular exercise

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda, this is a predominantly VATA disorder and said to have serious consequences. If strict diet regime is followed with medicines and exercises, a good number of people can lead a normal life, rest of people can get relief in some of their complaints. Overall, ayurvedic treatment is definitely recommended for this disease.
