CELLULITE

It is a cosmetic defect, where there is pitting, bulging and feeling of tightness and heaviness in the areas affected.

Causes


1) Natural more thick uppermost subcutaneous tissue in women makes them prone to this problem
2) Ageing – due to ageing fat cells migrate and hypertrophy give rise to feel of cellulite

Clinical feature


Areas involved are gluteal and thigh regions, lower abdomen, nape of neck and upper arms

Major stages


1) Stage 0 – skin of thighs and buttocks has smooth surface when subject is standing or lying. Pinch test- skin folds and furrows but does not pit or bulge
2) Stage I – skin surface smooth while standing or lying, pinch test clearly positive for pitting, bulging of affected areas
3) Stage II – skin surface smooth while lying but when standing there is pitting, bulging and deformity of affected skin
4) Stage III – mattress phenomenon when lying or standing

Therapeutic consideration


1) Maintain slim subcutaneous fat layer via exercise
2) Maintaining normal body weight. Weight reduction should be gradual, fast weight reduction exacerbate cellulite
3) Massage – self administered, improves blood and lymph circulation
4) Centella asiatica – helps in reduction

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda, this is a predominantly KAPHA disorder with involvement of MEDA DHATU. But if ayurvedic medicines are taken with a diet regime and regular exercises, can cure this problem completely. Therefore, ayurvedic medicines are strongly recommended for this problem.
