It is a non- specific inflammatory response limited to colonic mucosa and sub-mucosa
Symptoms
1) Bloody diarrhea with cramps in lower abdomen
2) Mild abdominal tenderness, weight loss and fever
3) Can be accompanied by perianal irritation, fissures, hemorrhoids, fistulas and abcesses
Investigation
1) X-ray
2) Sigmoidoscopy
3) Stool examination to detect blood
Causative factors
1) Genetic predisposition – multiple members of a family have ulcerative colitis
2) Infections – viruses and bacterias are blamed
3) Antibiotic exposure – ulcerative colitis is found more in people, who are exposed to early and large quantities of antibiotics
4) Immune system derangements
5) Disease is increasing in cultures consuming western diet i.e., refined carbohydrates
6) Emotional stress
7) Abuse of aspirin is also blamed
Therapeutic consideration
1) High complex carbohydrates – high fiber diets are useful
2) Iron – to correct anemia due to blood loss
3) Calcium – to correct loss due to less absorption
4) Potassium – to correct loss due to diarrhea
5) For weakness – to correct deficiency due to poor absorption
Ayurveda approach
According to ayurveda, this is a predominantly PITTA and RAKTA disorder. Involvement of KAPHA is also seen in this problem. Although the treatment period of this problem is more, it can be cured completely with medicines and diet regime. Therefore, ayurvedic treatment is strongly recommended for this problem.
