CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

Fatigue which disrupts daily activities in absence of other pathosis associated with fatigue.

Symptoms


1) Mild fever
2) Recurrent sore throat
3) Painful lymph nodes
4) Muscle weakness and pain
5) Prolonged fatigue after exercise
6) Recurrent headache
7) Migratory joint pain
8) Sleep disturbance

Causes


1) Epstein Barr virus – elevated antibody titres to viruses observed in CFS patients
2) Other viral infections
3) Immune system abnormalities – elevated antibody levels, altered interferon
4) Fibromyalgia
5) Other causes –

a) pre-existing pathosis
b) depression
c) stress
d) low adrenal function
e) impaired liver function
f) environmental illness
g) food allergies
h) thyroid problems
i) nutritional deficiencies
j) sleep disturbances

Investigations


1) Routine blood test
2) Routine urine test

Therapeutic consideration


1) Avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking, sugar and refined food
2) Identify underlying factors, optimize hepatic detox, control food allergy, restore G.I. function, support immune function
3) Lifestyle – diaphragmatic breathing, proper posture, regular low intensity exercise

Ayurveda approach
