DIABETES MELLITUS

It is a chronic disorder of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism characterized by fasting elevations of blood glucose.

Types – there are two types of diabetes type I & type II

Symptoms


1) Polyuria – increase in the frequency of urination
2) Polydipsia – increased thirst
3) Polyphagia – increased hunger

Causes


1) Viral infection – viruses are capable of infecting beta cell and inducing Diabetes mellitus
2) Autoimmunity – leading to beta cell destruction
3) Early weaning and bovine milk exposure- in type I patient it is more likely that he / she have been breast feeded for less than 3 months and exposed to cow milk or solid foods before 4 months
4) Obesity – obese people are more prone
5) Dietary fat – high fat, low carbohydrate diet increases the risk of diabetes
6) Chromium deficiency
7) Prenatal factors – prenatal malnutrition may promote diabetes

Complications


1) Atherosclerosis
2) Neuropathy
3) Retinopathy
4) Nephropathy
5) Diabetic foot ulcers
6) Diabetic coma

Investigations 

1) Fasting & post meal blood sugar levels
2) Glycosylated haemoglobin

Therapeutic consideration

1) Diet – reduce highly refined carbohydrate diet
2) Dietary fiber – diabetes related to inadequate dietary fiber intake. Good sources of fiber legumes, oat, bran, nuts, seeds, psyllium seed husk, pears, apples and most vegetables
3) Fruits and diabetes – patient can tolerate moderate amount of fruits and fructose
4) Chromium* helps
5) Vit-C* also is beneficial
6) Niacin* is beneficial
7) Biotin*is useful
8) Potassium, manganese, zinc*-is very helpful
9) Botanicals – Allium cepa, Allium sativum, Gymnema sylvestre, Trigonella foenum graecum, Pterocarpus marsupium
10) Exercise especially walking

Ayurveda approach


Ayurveda is perhaps the first medical science in the world, which has described the symptoms of diabetes elaborately. If medicines and diet regime is started within a year of occurrence, diabetes can be cured completely. After 2 years the cure varies from patient to patient.
