FACIAL PARALYSIS

It is a common neurological problem. A lower motor neuron lesion of the facial nerve results in paralysis of all muscles of facial expression.

Signs & symptoms


1) Absence of furrowing on the forehead
2) Inability to close the ipsilateral eye
3) Drooping of the angle of the mouth

Causes


1) Cerebral vascular disease
2) Infarctions and neoplasms of the brain stem
3) Infranuclear lesions – tumor compressing the nerve causes paralysis
4) Other causes like tubercular meningitis, meningovascular syphylis, fractures of temporal bone, otitis media, herpes zoster
5) Other problems like diabetes and hypertension may complicate matters

Investigations


1) A brain scan or MRI

Therapeutic consideration


1) Vit-C*
2) Vit-E*
3) Potassium*
4) Magnesium*
5) Treat underlying causes
6) Manage diabetes mellitus and hypertension
7) Exercise especially for the facial muscle is very important
8) Massage with warm sesame oil helps a lot

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda, this is predominantly a VATA disorder and MAJJAVAHA strotas is involved. But an early ayurvedic treatment with a strict diet regime can completely cure this disease. Exercise also plays a big role in the curing process. Therefore, ayurvedic treatment is strongly recommended for this problem.
