DYSMENORRHOEA

Painful menstruation of sufficient magnitude so as to incapacitate day to day activities.

Types of dysmenorrhoea


1) Primary dysmenorrhoea– there is no identifiable pelvic pathology

Cause

1) Abdominal anatomical and functional aspect of uterus
2) Anxiety and tension

Symptoms

1) Primary dysmenorrhoea is dominantly confined to adolescent girls
2) Pain begins a few hours before or just with the onset of menstruation. Pain may last for few hours to 24 hours
3) Nausea, vomiting, fatigue, diarrhea and headache may be present, low back pain, thigh pain

Investigations

1) Ultrasonography of abdomen and pelvis
2) Routine blood test
3) Urine routine test

2) Secondary dysmenorrhoea

It is menstruation associated pain occurring in the presence of pelvic pathology

Causes

1) Chronic pelvic infection
2) Pelvic endometriosis
3) Adenomyosis
4) Uterine fibroid
5) Endometrial polyp
6) IUCD (intra uterine contraceptive device)

Symptoms

1) Pain is dull in nature
2) Pain appears 3-5 days prior to the period and relieves with the start of bleeding

Investigations

1) Ultrasonography of abdomen and pelvis

Therapeutic consideration


1) Relaxation techniques – to reduce anxiety because anxiety is also a very common cause
2) Hot fomentation helps

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda, this disease occurs due to PITTA dosha. If medicines are taken with a strict diet control, can cure this disease completely and hysterectomy surgery can be avoided. Therefore, for this disease ayurvedic treatment is strongly recommended.
