MENORRHAGIA

Excessive menstrual bleeding i.e. blood loss > 80 ml occurring at regular cyclical intervals.

Possible causes


1) Excessive estrogen
2) Failure of midcycle surge of LH
3) Hypothyroidism
4) Hyperprolactinemia
5) Polycystic ovarian disease
6) Fibroids
7) Polyps
8) Cancer
9) Ectopic pregnancy
10) Intrauterine devices
11) Bleeding disorders

Symptoms


1) Excessive bleeding during menses
2) Weakness, muscle cramps especially calf muscles
3) Sometimes pain, lower abdominal or low back

Investigation


1) Haemogram – especially to see hemoglobin
2) Abdomino-pelvic ultrasonography to rule out growth
3) Thyroid evaluation
4) Bleeding time and clotting time

Therapeutic factors


1) Relaxation techniques – to reduce anxiety because anxiety is also a very common cause
2) Iron – chronic iron deficiency can be cause of menorrhagia. Beet root, spinach, drum sticks, jaggery are good sources of iron
3) Vit-A*
4) Vit-C – increases capillary strength*
5) Vit-K can correct bleeding disorder*
6) Correct basic cause
7) Chlorophyll

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda, this disease occurs due to PITTA dosha. If medicines are taken with a strict diet control, can cure this disease completely and hysterectomy surgery can be avoided. Therefore for this disease, ayurvedic treatment is strongly recommended.
