EPILEPSY

Epilepsies are a group of disorders characterized by sudden, recurrent and episodic changes in neurologic function caused by abnormalities in electrical activity of the brain.

Symptoms


1) Recurrent seizures
2) Mental status abnormalities

Causes


1) Brain damage before or at birth (congenital malformations, anemia, fetal infection)
2) Head trauma injuring brain and gliosis
3) Central nervous system infection
4) Metabolic disorders like hypocalcemia, hypoglycemia, hypoparathyroidism, phenylketonuria
5) Brain tumours and other space occupying lesions
6) Stroke and other vascular disorders
7) Degenerative brain disease
8) Genetic disease
9) Toxic conditions – environmental toxins
10) Idiopathic – about 70% of cases are idiopathic

Diagnosis


Serum glucose and calcium, CBC, liver function test, kidney function test, skull X-ray, EEG, CT scan, cerebro-spinal fluid exam

Therapeutic approach


1) Hypoglycemia is an important cause of seizures, correction of glucose,correction of any abnormalities helps the patient
2) Ketogenic diet – in adult persons taking more fats and less carbohydrates and proteins are found to be useful
3) Treat intestinal problem if any
4) Pyridoxine*
5) Thiamine*
6) Magnesium*
7) Vit-D*
8) Vit-E and selenium*
9) Treating underlying cause

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda, this disease is called “APASMAR” and is a dominantly vata, pitta and kapha disorder.
