FEBRILE CONVULSIONS

It is the most common convulsive disorder. It is defined as a convulsion occurring usually between 6 months and 3 years, but not later than 5 years, associated with fever but without evidence of intracranial infection or defined cause.

Causes


1) Fever (temperature above 40 Degree Celcius)
2) Fever associated with measles and other infectious diseases
3) Fever in a child with developmental defeat (history of delayed mental and physical milestones)
4) Genetic predisposition

Symptoms


1) Convulsions – rhythmic movements of groups of muscles and extension of axial or appendicular musculature
2) Rarely more than one seizure in 24 hours occurs
3) Convulsions rarely lasts for more than 15 minutes

Investigations


1) EEG
2) Blood sugar levels
3) Hemoglobin to see white blood cells

Therapeutic consideration


1) Underlying infections should be treated
2) Temperature should be controlled at any cost. If no medicines are available cold water packs should used to bring down temperature

Ayurveda approach


According to ayurveda, this is a PITTA disorder and it starts with JWARA. So if jwara (fever) is controlled safely this problem can be cured completely.
Ayurvedic medicines improves the basic immunity of person resulting in less chances of infections and temperature. Therefore during normal periods, ayurvedic treatment is highly recommended to avoid future attacks.
