FISTULA IN ANO

It is a track lined by granulation tissue, which opens deeply in the anal canal or rectum and superficially on the skin around the anus.

Causes

1) Fistula results from an ano-rectal abcess which burst spontaneously or was opened inadequately
2) The problem then becomes regular due to constant reinfection from the anal canal

Signs & symptoms

1) Persistent sero-purulent discharge that irritates the skin in the neighbourhood and causes discomfort
2) There may be one or two or many external openings
3) Pain is sometimes present

Therapeutic consideration

1) Diet – high fiber diet is the most important component in preventing fistula. Vegetables, fruits, legumes and grains promote peristalsis. Chances of fistula are more in persons who do not eat breakfast
2) Fiber supplements – Isabgol, wheat bran
3) Topical therapy- coconut oil externally to reduce itching
4) Fomentation – hot water hip bath is most beneficial

Ayurveda approach

According to ayurveda this is dominantly PITTA & VATA disorder. But if ayurvedic medicines are taken with a strict diet regime, can cure this problem completely. Therefore, ayurvedic medicines are strongly recommended for this problem.
