MENOPAUSE

Those are events accompanied by cessation of menstruation in older women for 6-12 months. The average age of onset is 51 years.

Symptoms


1) Hot flushes – most common symptom, can be accompanied by increased heart rate, dizziness, fatigue and insomnia
2) Atrophic vaginitis – vaginal lining may become thin and dry from lack of estogen
3) Bladder infection – because of breakdown in natural defenses
4) Cold hands and feet
5) Forgetfulness with inability to concentrate

Cultural view of menopause is directly related to symptoms of menopause, if cultural view is negative, symptoms are common. If menopause is viewed in a positive light, symptoms are less frequent

1) Bone density test to evaluate osteoporosis
2) Complete blood count
3) Thyroid function test

Therapeutic approach

1) Phytoestrogen containing food – fennel, celery, parsley, soy, nuts, whole grains, apples
2) Vit-E-*
3) Rice bran
4) Vit-C*
5) Reduce smoking
6) Exercise – women exercising regularly can pass through a natural menopause
7) Avoid extra caffeine and antihistamines
8) Proper hydration
